Dear friend of The Washington Spectator -
I'm sending this year-end note to everyone who understands that our democracy is in grave jeopardy, and who has seen firsthand the value of our work at the Spectator.
At least one thing is clear - ownership of the news by billionaires who rely on government contracts is bad for journalism and bad for democracy.
We have always wanted for the Spectator to be independent, and to avoid duplicating what our readers were already reading. When Anne Nelson wrote her series in the Spectator about the takeover of the Republican Party by the Far Right, her articles were seen as revelatory.
When our series “Dancing in the Dark” laid out vulnerabilities in the Constitution, these articles gave birth to a cottage industry of news reports that explored the loopholes in the constitutional framework and the weaknesses in the election system.
With Trump’s return to power in 2025, all of the hand-wringing over our fragile Constitution that had appeared in the Spectator has played out in real time, and at an unexpectedly ferocious pace that caught many in the media flat-footed.
One journalist, expressing admiration for the Spectator, recently called us “that Karmen Ghia of a media brand.” In an era when encomiums - even mildly ironic ones - are in short supply, I’ll take it.
Our focus in the coming year will be on holding this rogue administration and its anti-democratic allies accountable. I am reaching out to ask if you would consider making a year-end tax-deductible contribution to enable our ongoing work.
